Disaster Recovery and Business Continuance FAQType in your Search Term
I replicate all my data to a remote site. Isn’t that enough?Data in and of itself is just that – data. Something needs to be in place to ensure that the data can be used in the way it was before. Without plans for user access, application server and other resources the data may exist but it will be unusable without support systems. Back to TopI backup and send my tapes off-site every night. What else do I need to do?Recalling one tape to recover a file is one thing. Imagine trying to recover all the tapes and rebuild an entire environment using just backup tapes. This would be an incredible undertaking and given the current failure rate of tape restores it would be highly unlikely that everything would be recovered in any sort of acceptable timeframe. Back to TopAll my data is replicated offsite. Why would I still need to backup locally?Replication software does exactly what you ask of it. If you delete a file the deletion gets replicated. If a file becomes corrupt the file in that state will get replicated. Since many replication technologies are based on block level reads and writes the replication process is completely unaware of what’s being replicated and the health of it. Back to TopWe did a DR test and everything worked as expected. How can you say that’s not a 100% true way to test? Were the systems completely isolated? Was replication software failed over cleanly or was replication broken? There have been numerous cases of DR tests being performed in too friendly of an environment. Many times things are taken for granted that are not available to us in a true recovery operation. Back to TopWhat are the chances that I really will ever implement this? For sub units and individual systems the chances are quite higher than you would think. In the event of a large scale recovery more likely than not the business will fail without a full DR plan in place. A DR plan is insurance for the business itself and all of the intellectual capital it holds. Back to TopHow can altering my day to day operations improve my ability to recover?Standardizing on hardware and configurations makes many applications and system more portable and allows them to be reallocated as needed to cover for systems that may be having difficulty. Back to TopI don’t have any customer facing systems. Why should any of this concern me?As stated earlier every business has intellectual assets that need to be protected. The loss of information assets can be devastating to a business. Back to TopOur environment is incredibly complex and would be nearly impossible to rebuild. How can I possibly get a handle on things? There are many options in place to streamline DR processes. The first step is to break down the environment into smaller sub components and begin to analyze the criticality of each system. Back to Top
